Bird's Nest With Two Eggs.

While clearing my compound, my son found this bird's nest with two eggs on one of the flower plants. According to my grand ma, if anybody disturb the bird's nest with eggs, the bird will no longer look after the eggs. It was true because after a week, the bird left the nest and the eggs were rotten. I warned my son not to disturb any bird's nest when the birds layed eggs in the future.

A rooster, also called a cock or chanticleer, is a male chicken (Gallus gallus) with the female being called a hen. Immature male chickens of less than a year's age are called cockerels. The oldest term is "cock," from Old English coc. It is sometimes replaced by the term "cockerel" (which properly refers to a young male chicken) in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and almost always by "rooster" (a relative neologism) in North America, Australia and New Zealand. "Cock" is in general use as the name for a male of other species of bird, for example "Cock sparrow." "Roosting" is the action of perching aloft to sleep at night, and is done by both sexes. In the United States, "rooster" is preferred due to sexual connotations with the word "cock". The rooster is polygamous, but cannot guard several nests of eggs at once. He guards the general area where his hens are nesting, and will attack other roosters who enter his territory. During the daytime, he often sits on a high perch, usually 4–5 feet off the ground to serve as a lookout for his flock. He will sound a distinctive alarm call if predators are nearby.

The rooster is often portrayed as crowing at the break of dawn and will almost always start crowing before 4 months of age. He can often be seen sitting on fence posts or other objects, where he crows to proclaim his territory.

However, this idea is more romantic than real, as a rooster can and will crow at any time of the day. Some roosters are especially vociferous, crowing almost constantly, while others only crow a few times a day. These differences are dependent both upon the cock's breed and individual personality.

He has several other calls as well, and can cluck, similar to the hen. Roosters will occasionally make a patterned series of clucks to attract hens to a source of food, the same way a mother hen does for her chicks.

Capons

A capon is a castrated rooster. Unlike most other male birds, roosters have a small penis to facilitate mating. In the caponization procedure, the bird's testes are completely removed; a surgical procedure is required for this as the rooster's sexual organs are internal. As a result of this procedure, certain male physical characteristics will experience stunted development:

The comb and wattles cease growing after castration, giving a capon's head a dwarfed appearance.

The hackle, tail and saddle feathers grow unusually long.

Caponization also affects the disposition of the bird. Removal of the bird's testes eliminates the male sex hormones, lessening the male sex instincts and changing their behaviour: the birds become more docile and less active and tend not to fight.

This procedure produces a unique type of poultry meat which is favoured by a specialized market. The meat of normal uncastrated roosters has a tendency to become coarse, stringy and tough as the birds age. This process does not occur in the capon. As caponized roosters grow more slowly than intact males they accumulate more body fat; the concentration of fat in both the light and dark areas of the capon meat is greater than in that of the uncastrated males; overall, it is often thought that capon meat is more tender, juicy, and flavorful than regular chicken.

In China, the Yangbi Huang breed can grow to be the largest rooster in the Asian continent, up to 35 cm long. This is thought to be caused by the castration of the roosters practised by farmers in Northern China, which affects the hormonal balance called a cockpit between two gamecocks. Gamecocks are not typical farm chickens. The roosters are specially bred and trained for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle is cut off of a young gamecock because if left intact, it would be a disadvantage during a match. This process is called "dubbing." Sometimes the roosters are given drugs to increase their stamina or thicken their blood, which increases their chances of winning. Cockfighting is considered a traditional sporting event by some, and an example of animal cruelty by others and is therefore outlawed in most countries.^[3] Usually wagers are made on the outcome of the match, with the surviving or last-bird-standing being declared the winner.

The cockerel "Waltz," when the cockerel struts in a half circle with one wing extended down, is an aggressive approach signifying to females his dominance, and usually, the female will submit by running or moving away from the cockerel in acknowledgement. On rare occasions, the hen will attempt to fight the cockerel for dominance. Once dominance is established, the cockerel will rarely waltz again. When other cockerels are in the hen yard, this waltz is used significantly more and most cockerels will waltz together if dominance has not been established, and either, one will back off or the two cockerels will fight. Note also that the cockerel will waltz again if he is taken out of the pen for a period, usually 24 hrs, and put back.

Some more aggressive cockerels will drop and extend both wings and puff out all their body feathers to give the hens and/or other roosters the impression of a larger size, and charge through the hen yard like a bull.

The cockerel was already of symbolic importance in Gaul at the time of the invasion of Julius Caesar and was associated with the god Lugus.Today it is an emblem of France and Wallonia and Denizli.

The fighting cockerel on a ball is the symbol for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The cockerel wears a pair of spurs which is a reference to the club's nickname. It has been present on their crest and shield since 1901. Additionally, the cockerel is the emblem of Turkish sports club Denizlispor, which was founded in 1966. Also, the supporters of the club are called cockerels.

yedsterday, I promised to publish the result of the Quranic Recital, Speech and Story Telling competetion which was held at SMK Serian. Unfortunately, all the result was sent directly to the PPD office. The Price giving ceremony will be held at the Mini Stadium Serian in conjunction with the Prophets Muhammad Birthday Celebration. The celebration would include procession, banner competition and followed by speeches by distinguished guests and the pizes will be given for all the winners of the best contingent, The winners of the yesterday's MTQ and the winners of banner competion.

This year, the Prophet Muhamad's Birthday Celebration is organised by The Serian District Education Office.

To all my visitors, it's quite a long time that this blog is not updated.

I think its not too late for me to say A Happy New Year - Kung Hsi Fa' Tsai" to all my chinese friends. I convey my apology for not visiting you this year, especially Mr. Chai, Mr. Yeo, Miss Thian, Miss Lim Lii Kian, and many others whom I may not be able to mention here. To Puan Chong Hwee Theng and Mr. Tsai, thanks for your mandarin oranges.

My car is still in the workshop after we encountered a serious accident recently (on the 31st January 2010). Thanks God -the 4 of us were saved. We escaped from any injury.

I take the opportunity to convey my greatest appreciation to all friends who sympathised on us. Especially Cikgu AJ and family, Puan Rohana Bero, Encik Jamali whom in any form rendered their help to us. Not forgetting the passers-by who stopped at the scene, espedially Cikgu Jalil Chek's, brother (sorry I could not remember your name) , Mr Abok and many others whom I could not recognise. May God Bless you all.

Tomorrow, the school will reopen after a week break. The District Level Inter-School Quranic Recital will be held at SMK Serian. I am assigned to do the calculation Of Points scored by the Male Participants in Story-Telling in male Section. I have to bring my own calculator.

My mother in-law's house

My fanily and I spent my holiday in Johor. We stayed at my mother-law's house in Kampung Parit Sempadan, Batu Pahat. We stayed there for 3 weeks. The house was located about 3 km from tthe main road. Inorder to go to the town, we have to get somebody to send us to the main road by motorcycle or car. If not, we have to go on foot. My brother in-law have a motocycle. So each time I want to go to the town, we asked his help to send us to the junction. Coming back from the town, we get a taxi. The taxi fare per trip is RM 20.00. The taxi driver will ask for the location of the house. he will never ask for the house number. Instead, he will ask for the lamp post. aHow many lamp post from the junction to the house. The first time, I ws a bit puzzled. Please do not expect me to count for the number of the lamp posts. It is not my job to do so. When I reaced home I started to look at the lamp post just in front of the house. There is a number printed at every lamp post, starting from the first lamp post at the junction. So, my mother in-law's house is located at the 30th lamp pos.

One morning, on November 28, 2009, I went to the Hot Spring Pool in Gersik Muar together with my brother in-law and our children. Here are some notes about the history of the hot spring wchich I goot from the information board at the entrance.

Sejarah Kolam Air Panas Sungai Gersik Muar

Menurut sejarah yang dapat dikesan dari Pejabat Pendaftaran Tanah dan cerita orang tua-tua, pembukaan Kampung Gersik ini bermula pada tahun 1883. Peneroka asal kampong ini ialah Orangkaya Ali dari Muar dan para pengikutnya yang menyusuri pantai Selat Melaka setelah berlaku perselisihan keluarga.

Penemuan kolam air panas Sungai Gersik merupakan satu-satunya yang airnya sentiasa panas secara semulajadi terdapat di Daerah Muar khasnya dan negeri Johor amnya. Kolam air panas ini mula ditemui oleh Tuan Haji Abd Rahman bin Haji Irsad atau lebih dikenali dengan nama Haji Abdul Rahman bin Getu pada tahun 1911. Ketika ini Kampung Sungai Gersik telah diterokai sejauh 2.5 Kilometer ke pedalaman dan kawasan sekitar Kolam Air Panas ini masih lagi hutan belantara. Pada suatu hari, Haji Abd Rahman telah masuk ke hutan untuk mencari linau dan anak kayu untuk dijadikan bahan membuat pondoknya. Setelah linau anak kayu diperolehi menjelang tengah hari, beliau telah ternampak sesuatu yang aneh menyerupai sebuah tasik kecil bergais pusat kira-kira 3 meter dikelilingi oleh lembah berlumpur serta semak. Airnya menggelegak dan berasap mengalir ke lembah di sekitarnya. Setelah itu, Haji Abd Rahman berasa seram dan takut lalu terus meninggalkan tempat itu tanpa mengambil kayu yang dikumpulnya tadi. Malang sungguh nasib Haji Abd Rahman kerana beliau tidak Berjaya mencari jalan pulang, sesat hingga ke senja. Haji Abd Rahman pun pulang lantas menceritakan kiisqah penemuannya itu kepada penduduk kampong. Anehnya kolam yang menjadi cerita hangat di kalangan penduduk kampong itu tidak pula ditemui apabila dicari. Kira-kira 3 bulan kemudian, haji Abd Rahman bersama Rajikan pergi ke hutan untuk mencari anak kayu dan rotan menemui semula kolam air panas yang diceritajan itu, beliau terus merintis jalan serta membuat tanda pada pokok-pokok sampai ke jalan keluar dari tempat yang tidak dapat dilupai hingga sekarang. TO KNOW OUR LOCAL FRUITS AND PLANTS 10

Scientific name: Artocarpus odoratissimusFamily: MoraceaeCommon names: Marang, Tarap, Green Terap, Johey OakOrigin: Malesia, Borneo, Brunei Marang, or Tarap, is one of the most delicious tropical fruit and beautiful exotic tree. It has lobed leaves, as large as 2-4ft long and 1 ft broad, similar to the Breadfruit's, but a little less lobed. It is native to Southeastern Asia. In a wild, is found extensively in Brunei Darussalam and parts of Sabah and Sarawak. Fruit As indicated by the scientific name, the fruit has a strong scent. It is delicious, soft flavored and can be appreciated from the first bite. The fruit is considered superior in flavor to both Jackfruit or Chempedak. It is oblong, 10-12" long, and can weight up to a few pounds. The appearance of the fruit can be regarded as an intermediate shape between the Jackfruit and the Breadfruit. The fruit color turns from a light green to a deep shade of brown when mature. The skin is covered with soft spines, and has an appearance which is close to that of the Durian or the Jackfruit. The thick rind is covered with soft, broad spines. They become hard and brittle as the fruit matures. The fruit does not fall to the ground when ripe. It may be harvested while still hard, and left to ripen until soft. The ripe fruit is opened by cutting the rind around. Twisting and gently pulling the halves complete the operation. The interior of the fruit is somewhat similar to the jackfruit's, but the color is whitish. The core is relatively large, but there are fewer "rags" and less non-edible parts. Arils are white and the size of a grape, each containing a 1/2" seed. Once opened, the fruit should be consumed quickly (in a few hours), as it loses flavor rapidly and fruit oxidizes. The pulp of the fruit is eaten fresh, has delightful fragrant aroma. It is sweet, nutritious and has been used in many food preparations. Young unripe fruits are sometimes eaten as vegetables. The seeds are also valuable. Roasted, the seed has firm texture, nutty, not too oil and has a taste reminiscent of chestnut. These features hold tremendous potential for Tarap fruit and seeds to be developed into food products. This versatile tree has served the needs of the rural communities well providing food, nutrition and many other uses to people. It is cultivated in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Southern Thailand. The fruit is grown for local consumption, but the short shelf-life of the fruit limits its wider use. The fruit ripens quite quickly, and once it's ripe it deteriorates in less than a few days so exporting is a problem. There are no commercial plantations cultivating this fruit and thus availability is dependent on prospectors who venture into the thickets of jungles to retrieve them. When the season starts, truckloads can be found by the roadsides hawking Tarap. Ripe or not? Ripening takes only a few days and most tarap cannot be kept longer than a week. The fruits can be picked and stored in the refrigerator though but still shelf life is not too good and best enjoyed at once. To determine if the fruit is ripe, use the smell test first, and mind you it does smell although not as bad as famous "stinky" Durian. When ripe, the smell will be a sharp pungent aroma even when the fruit is unopened, the stronger the smell the riper the fruit is. The best is when you can detect a faint whiff and not too overpowering before you open it. The other indicator is how you feel the fruit. Grasp both your arms around one and gently rub and squeeze the fruit. As it ripens, the hard fruit will feel a bit mushy in you grasp. If fluid is dripping profusely from the fruit it could mean that the content within is already spoiling and should not be considered. Over ripe fruits would give your mouth a strong taste of fermented alcohol. To open the fruit, just press your thumb into the soft skin and pry the pieces away and you’ll be greeted by a nicely arranged array of white "fruits" that looks like pale miniature chempedaks. They will be wrapped in yellow tendrils extending from the husk and stuck to the main stem of the fruit found in the center. To eat, just twist the fruit and pop it into your mouth, the center of the fruit consists of a single oval shape brown seed. A single Tarap can hold as much as 150 to 200 little "fruits" within. The taste varies according to fruit. Fruits not fully ripen will have a starchy bitter taste while an evenly ripe one has the taste of rosemary with custard. Growing In tropical climate this evergreen tree grows to 60 ft tall, in subtropical areas it won't grow as tall and can stay under 20 ft. Marang can be grown in container inside a greenhouse, where it will enjoy high humidity. This tree is sensitive to freeze and requires protection below 45F. It needs regular watering and fertile well-drained soil. High air humidity is always a plus.The seedlings grow rapidly, first fruit can be expected within 3-4 years.

Alek, my new pet

Date of birth: 19th May 2009

2 weeks after born, her mom went out and never returned, we suspected of food poisoning, because the time she went out, our gardener sprayed the compound with weed killer. She left her 5 kitties. My 3 daughters looked after them. They tried their best to make the 5 kitties survived. However, 4 of them died. Only Alek survived.

Solanum mammosum, Solanaceae.

This species ia a semi-woody herb from Central Africa and South America. It grows into a small shrub with large leaves of serrated margin. Thorns are found on the leaves and stem. The flowers are rather small. The fruits are orange in colour, smooth and conical in shapes with rounded lobes at the base. The fruits can be used for flower arrangement for indoor decoration. It grows by seeds.

the rhinoceros beetle

The rhinoceros beetles or rhino beetle are a subfamily (Dynastinae) of beetles in the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). They are among the largest of beetles, and their common name refers to the characteristic horns borne by the males of most species in the group. The male beetles use their horns in mating battles against other males. Their larval stage is long, several years in some species. The larvae feed on rotten wood while the adults feed on nectar, plant sap and fruit. Rhinoceros beetle larvae are sometimes fried and eaten as a bush delicacy. However, their greatest economic importance is as pests: Oryctes rhinoceros especially can de-foliate and sometimes kill coconut and oil palms in the SE Asian and Pacific regions. Biological controls heve been developed, based on entomopathogen viruses and the fungus Metarhizium majus. Rhinoceros beetles are popular pets in Asia. They are clean, easy to maintain, and safe to handle. In Asian countries, male beetles are also used for gambling fights since they naturally compete for female beetles with the winner knocking the other off a log. Rhinoceros beetles are also the strongest animals on the planet in relation to their own size. It is native to southeast Asia, occurring in Malaysia, Myanmar, Brunei,Indonesia and the Philippines (Palawan). The taste of the fruit is similar to the related Jackfruit and Breadfruit with a hint of Durian. A sweet, mild, and juicy pulp surrounds the peanut-like seeds in a thick layer between the husk and an inedible core. The outer husk of the fruit is slightly sticky. PAPAYA, Carica papaya, CARICACEAE

In malay, it is known as buah betik.

It is a sappy soft tissued, quick growing but short-lived plant. It grows 2-10 metres in height. It is believed to be a native of tropical America where it is called pawpaw as well as melon zapote. Today, it is grown in tropical countries.

All parts of the plant produce a milky juice(or latex), which contains the enzymea papain and chymopapain, both of which have protein-digesting and milk clothing properties.

The plants are usually dioecious (only male or female flowers are present. Male and female plants are identical in appearence until flowers appear. They come into bearing at about 6-12 months.

The fruits vary greatly in size, shape and flavour. They may measure 7-60 cm long and weighing up to 9 kg.

They are usually eaten when ripe as desert. The flesh is very rich in vitamin A and calcium and has also some vitamin C.

Many varieties of papaya are grown in Malaysia. Among thebetter known ones, the yellow-fleshed type includes Serdang, Honey Dew, and Morib, while the red-fleshed kind includes Batu Arang, Subang 6 and Taiping 3.

PINEAPPLE, ANANAS COMOSUS, BROMELIACEAE.

In Malay, it is known as buah nanas.

It is originated from South America. The name nanas in Malay is derived from Indian Language, that is nana.

It is a collective fruit, that is it developes from a whole inflorescence with many flowers and not from a single flower as for durian.

In cultivation, good varieties of pineapple seldom produce seeds, hence, there are propagated vegetatively. Such reproduction also ensures uniformity of the variety. The seeds, when formed, are normally used for the production of new variety.

There are many cultivated varieties of pineapple. The most important commercial varieties in Malaysia fall into two groups - those for canning (nanas merah nad nanas hijau) and those for eating raw (nanas Sarawak and nanas Moris). The fruits for nanas Sarawak are medium-sized with pale yellow flesh and thick central core. Those of Nanas Moris are small, with fairly bright yellow flesh and thin central woody core. They are usually very sweet and perhaps the best for desert.

The fruits also forms one of the main ingredients of a local salad preparationcalled rojak. It also makes excellent jam.

TO KNOW OUR FRUITS/PLANTS 9 The Foetid Passion Flower or Stinking Passion Flower (Passiflora foetida), also known as the Wild Maracuja or Running Pop In Malay, it is known as pokok letup-letup - is a creeping vine which has an edible fruit and leaves that have a mildly rank aroma. It is native to northern South America and the West Indies; it can also be found in South East Asian countries like Vietnam and on Hawaii. The stems are thin, wiry and woody, covered with sticky yellow hairs. The leaves are three- to five-lobed and viscid-hairy. They give off an unpleasant odour when crushed. The flowers are white to pale cream coloured, about 5-6 cm diameter. The fruit is globose, 2-3 cm diameter, yellowish-orange to red when ripe, and has numerous black seeds embedded in the pulp; the fruit are eaten and the seeds dispersed by birds. The bracts of this plant serve as insect traps, but it is as yet unknown whether the plant digests and gains nourishment from the trapped insects or if it merely uses the bracts as a defensive mechanism to protect its flowers and fruit. This is still an issue of debate and research among carnivorous plant enthusiasts. This passion flower tolerates arid ground, but favours wet areas. It is known to be an invasive species in some areas. Uses The fruits are kumquat sized with a thin, scarlet red shell surrounding a blush-white pulp, mildly sweet, delicately flavored. Young leaves and plant tips are edible. Dry leaves are used in tea in Vietnamese folk medicine to relieve sleeping problems.

A native of Polinesia, an important staple food.

Like the jackfruit, it is formed from the whole inflorescnce.

The fruit is moreor less round in shape, measuring form 10 t0 30 cm in iameter.

Two types of fruit, the seeded (breadfruits) and seedless (breadnuts). The seeded mostly used as vegetables where as the seedless variety may be sliced, boiled, backed or fried. it can also be grounded and made into biscuits. The fruit is 20% full of carbohydrates. The breadnuts variety, the seeds are eaten after cooking and flavoured as a chestnut.

In Malay it is known as Belimbing Manis. A popular fruit trees which grows up to 10 metres high with many branches. The flowers are panicles on the twigs by the leaves all year round. The tiny lilac flowers are beautiful.

The corss-section of the fruit are star-shapped, that is why it is known as starfruit. It has a shiny, smooth and waxy surface.

The sweet friuts can be eaten as dessert, the sour ones are made into jelly, jam or juice. The fruits are rich in vitamin C

Early on the morning of the wedding day, the groom’s party will come to the bride’s house in long boats which are decorated with beautiful pua kumbu (woven blankets) and flags. As they paddle along the river, the musicians perform the gendang with gongs and drums. The maidens and bachelors are in traditional costumes while men and women wear ordinary suits, kain batik and baju kebaya or baju kurong respectively. As their boats approach the bride’s landing place a gun is fired once or three times as a sign of their arrival. On hearing this, the hosts fire their guns as a sign of welcome. After the boats have landed, the guests are received by the Tuai Rumah and his companions at an open space (menalan) with offerings in case the guests have heard unfavorable omens as they paddled along the river. From the menalan a procession is formed for the guests to enter the bride’s longhouse. This procession is led by the Tuai Rumah who carries a flag. He is followed by a man who carries a plate of offerings and a woman who throws popped rice (letup) along the route of the procession. Behind the elder woman are the maidens in their traditional dress consisting of kain pandak (short skirt), tumpa pirak (silver bracelets), rawai (corset), lampit (girdles), sabit (silver or brass chains), sugu tinggi (tall combs) decorated with coloured metal ornaments (ensuga) on the top of the tiara, silver necklaces (tenggak pirak), and they carry small silver boxes called buah pauh in their hands. Behind these girls are the bachelors wearing loin clothes (sirat), head gear decorated with hornbill feathers, silver bracelets and ivory armlets on their arms, and swords the scabbards of which are decorated with beads and hornbill feathers are carried at their side. In the rear are the musicians who play the gendang with gongs and drums. As they enter the house they are offered arak or tuak wine by the young men and maidens at each family’s lower gallery along the procession route. As the procession reaches the end of the house it turns round and finally stops at the bride’s family gallery, where the leading guests are asked by the representatives of the bride’s parents to open the door of the bride’s room with words of praise. After the opening of the door, the male guests are asked to take their seats along the upper and lower galleries facing the bride’s family bilek and along the galleries at both sides. The women guests sit in the bride’s family bilek. After all the guests have been received with tuak wine or arak and food, they are invited to change their seats. The hosts invite them to sit at their individual section of the gallery where they are served with drinks of various kinds. At noon a midday meal is served along the lower gallery. Sometime after the meal is over, the bride’s parents gather all the people to their gallery to witness the Melah Pinang ceremony. At the opening of the ceremony a representative of the bride’s family stands up and informs his audience that the bridal parents have agreed that the bridegroom and the bride are to be wed according to the custom of the Iban. At this wedding he begs the Penghulu, Tuai Rumah and all other senior guests to witness the payment of the bride wealth and other articles, as well as witness the agreements made between the two families for the union of their children as follows: 1. If the bridegroom divorces his spouse because she commits adultery, is quarrelsome or otherwise has a bad character, the woman’s family must refund the bride wealth and the gun and gong. In addition to these they must pay the groom $ 150 if the amount of the bride price was $300, which is an additional one-half of the total amount of the bride wealth. 2. If the bride divorces her husband due to his bad character as mentioned in (a) above, the groom will lose all of the bride wealth and other articles. As soon as the bride wealth has been paid and the marriage agreement has been made public, a senior woman, preferably the bride’s mother or her aunt, will bring out from the family room areca-nut in a small finely-made, carrying basket called a selok to the middle of the lower gallery (ruai). There she is surrounded by the elderly women and male bards, if any are present. As she sits there, she cuts the areca-nuts into three, five or seven pieces in the presence of the groom’s and bride’s relatives. The number depends on the distance separating the bride’s and groom’s community; the greater the distance the more the number. When this is done, the pieces of areca-nut are put in the selok basket and covered by a beautiful woven blanket. As the selok is lying under the pua kumbu cover, a bard sings a song and pretends to nurse a child. In his song, he prays that in the future the child will become a well-to-do man or a brave warrior. As he sings on and on, he pretends that the child is sleeping. So he stops his song. A few minutes later another bard sings a song to wake the child up again. He relates that while the child was sleeping it dreamed of meeting the deity of wealth and good fortune, Anda Mara, and the goddesses Kumang and Lulong, the wives of Keling and Laja of the Panggau Libau spiritual world, who gave it charms which can make it wealthy and brave in war. He further says that in time to come the child will become a famous leader of men in many adventures all over the countries round about. A similar dream is related for girls. This enacted dream song reflects the importance attributed by the Iban to dreams as a source of prophesy and divine benefaction, and, of course, is intended here to bring good fortune and success to the future children of the newly married couple. During the melah pinang ceremony, the guests are served with wine, coffee and delicious food including bread and cakes. As soon as the bards have finished singing their songs of nindok ke anak and ngerak anak, the guests are asked to sit in a long row along the upper and lower galleries. After the seating of the guests has been arranged, the hosts serve them a midday meal. After the meal is over, if the marriage is incestuous, the guests and hosts, led by the Penghulu and other leaders who officiate the besapat ka ai bathing ceremony, proceed to the river to cleanse the bridal couple of their sin. A description of this ceremony was given earlier in the section on “Marriage and Incest” (cf. pp 28-29). As soon as the bathing ceremony of the bridal couple is over, the bridegroom, his parents and other guests return to their house with the bride in her traditional dress. Seated near her in the bridegroom’s boat is a bride’s maid from the bride’s own longhouse. Also near them are the girls of the bridegroom’s house who have come with the groom to the bride’s house that morning. As the boats are paddled by men along the river, the musicians begin to play gongs and drums and the music continues till they reach their pengkalan (landing place). Shortly after the bridegroom and others have left for the bride’s house in the morning, a number of women who could not join them decorate the bridegroom’s family room (bilek) by spreading good mats on the floors and displaying the pua kumbu blankets from a cord along the walls of the room. When the bride arrives in the evening, she is led by a procession of maidens (who return from her house) to the bridegroom’s house. As she enters the building, she is cordially invited to stay for an hour or two with her bridesmaid in the room of bridegroom’s closest relatives. Here they are served with soft drinks and other refreshments. Sometime after this, the bridegroom’s mother comes to fetch the bride to her room. The latter and her bridesmaid follow her. As she arrives at her spouse’s family room, she is asked by her mother-in-law to sit on the best tikai bebuah mats which have been specially spread for her. As she sits a number of girls of her age from other family rooms in the longhouse, come to talk to her. In the evening, after she has changed her dress, a dinner is served in the family room and the family eats together. After the evening meal is over, the bridegroom’s father calls for all the people of the longhouse to come to his family room to attend the bebiau ceremony, when the newly married couples are waved with a chicken by a shaman (manang) or a bard (lemambang). After all the people have arrived, a few young men serve everyone with wine. While the people are still drinking wine, the bridegroom dresses himself on the gallery outside, while the bride dresses herself somewhere out of people’s sight in the room. When the bride and the bridegroom have finished dressing themselves, four tawak gongs are placed side by side along the upper room (bilek atas). These gongs are carefully covered by carpets or pua kumbu blankets. Eventually the bride and her bridesmaid rejoin those who have gathered. They are seated close to each other on the two tawak gongs. Shortly afterwards comes the bridegroom who is attended by his closest bachelor friend who acts as his best man. The former sits close to the bride, while his best man sits close to him. As they sit here, a shaman stands up holding a chicken in his hands.

The Ngetas Ranyai Ceremony Once the offering ceremony is over, the main celebration of the Gawai begins. The community gathers around the ranyai at the common verandah of the longhouse. The Ranyai is a ceremonial tree which is decorated with different foodstuff and drinks. The longhouse echoes with the sounds of music, dancing and laughter, accompanied by food and frequent imbibing of the rice wine called tuak. The merrymaking lasts throughout the night. The competition was organised by Koperasi SMK Serian Bhd in conjuncton with the Koperasi Week 2008.

Solanum tarvun,

In Malay it is known as Pokok Terung Pipit,Terung Rembang orTerung Manggul, is a shrub growing to about 5 feet or more. It is used to treat headaches, aching muscles, cholera, diarrhoea and to bring down a high fever. A lotion made from the leaves is used to treat haemorrhoids or piles, whilst the roots may be pound into a paste to treat cracks in the feet. The fruit of the Terong Pipit is eaten to help reduce high blood pressure. Apart from these medicinal values, rural people add the leaves of the Terong Pipit into food as an appetite enhancer.

The eggplant, aubergine, or brinjal (Solanum melongena) in Malay t is known as buah terung. - a plant of the family Solanaceae (also known as the nightshades) and genus Solanum. It bears a fruit of the same name, commonly used as a vegetable in cooking. As a night-shade, it is closely related to the tomato and potato and is native to India and Sri Lanka. It is a delicate perennial often cultivated as an annual. It grows 40 to 150 cm (16 to 57 in) tall, with large coarsely lobed leaves that are 10 to 20 cm (4-8 in) long and 5 to 10 cm (2-4 in) broad. (Semi-)wild types can grow much larger, to 225 cm (7 ft) with large leaves over 30 cm (12 in) long and 15 cm (6 in) broad. The stem is often spiny. The flowers are white to purple, with a five-lobed corolla and yellow stamens. The fruit is fleshy, less than 3 cm in diameter on wild plants, but much larger in cultivated forms. The fruit is botanically classified as a berry, and contains numerous small, soft seeds, which are edible, but are bitter because they contain (an insignificant amount of) nicotinoid alkaloids, unsurprising in a close relative of tobacco.

They must avoid bad habbits such as smoking, drug abuses and so on in order to stay healthy. They must also do regular exercise. The closing of the programme was held on July 8th 2008 at 7.30 pm at the school hall (Seri Sadong Hall). It was officiated by Tuan Haji Rambli Zainuddin, the school's Principal. The programme began with the singing of the National Anthem, Negaraku.

In his speech, the Principal congratulated the working commitee members for the good job done. The school is always giving supports to any programme planned by the students for the good of every students. Everybody must stay healthy. Unhealthy body will jeopardise any effort to achieve success in life.

During the month, various competitions were held such as futsal, karaoke and dancing. The prizes for the winners were given away by Mr. Rige anak Panya, The senior Assistance For Form Six and Tuan Haji Rambli Zainuddin, the Principal.

PANDANUS AMARYLLIFOLIUS

In Malay is Pandan Wangi

Pandanus amaryllifolius is a tropical plant in the screwpine genus which is known commonly as pandan and used widely in Southeast Asian cooking. It is an erect green plant with fan-shaped sprays of long, narrow, bladelike leaves and woody aerial roots. The plant is sterile, flowers only very rarely, and is propagated by cuttings. The plant is rare in the wild but cultivated widely for use as a flavoring in cooking. The leaves are used fresh or wilted, and are commercially available in frozen form in Asian grocery stores in nations where the plant does not grow. They have a nutty, botanical fragrance which enhances the flavor of Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, and Indonesian foods, especially rice dishes and cakes. The leaves are sometimes steeped in coconut milk, which is then added to the dish. They may be tied in a bunch and cooked with the food. They also may be woven into a basket which is used as a pot for cooking rice. Pandan chicken, or gai ob bai toey, is a Thai dish with chicken wrapped in pandan leaves and fried. In Malay it s known as SALAK, Brown thin reptilian like skin encloses very delicious crunchy fruit. Fruits are size of a chicken egg or larger. SONNERATIA CASEOLARIS (BUAH PEDADA) Many people especially younger generations dont know about this plant. One day, one of my collegue brought the fruits in the staffroom, many of my collegues asked what the fruit was.

The fruit is persimmon-like with sepals whose tips bend away from the stalk. Found near the banks of tidal rivers in brackish water.It grows wild and the fruits are usualy eaten by monkeys. When ripe, the fruits are eaten raw or cooked. It is best taken raw with shrimp paste codiments. Fermented fruit juice is said to be useful in arresting haemorrhage. The wall of an old fruit is given as a vermifuge. The juice of half-ripe fruit is used to treat coughs. The juice of the flowers enters into a compound for treating blood in the urine. Pneumatophores were used as corks and floats.

FORM ONE A 1973- MUHDDAMINE - THE TALLEST GUY STANDING

About me I was born in 1958 in Kampung Pantong, Simunjan. I was sent to school when I was 8 years old in 1967 at Sungai Apin District Council School. This was due to alternate intake at that time. When I was 7 yrs old, there was no primary one intake, so I have to wait for another year. My late father wanted to send me to school at the age of 6, but my late mom said I was still too young to go to school. (at that time there was no kinder-garten). I was in Primary Six in 1972. I sat for Common Entrance Examination, whch is equivalent to UPSR. I was taught by only one teacher that was Mr Kipli bin Tupong (retired-the last post was as a Headmaster in Abang Man Primary School, Simunjan.) The Headmaster was Mr. Ahmad Awad al-Haj (also retired) The result of the Common Entrance Examination was announced. I obtained a very good result. Six of us were selected to go for Form One at Tun Abang haji Openg Secondary School in Kuching. Due to financial problem, my family could afford to send me to study there. Hence, I was sent to Simunjan Government Secondary School. (thank you Mr Kipli and Mr. Ahmad Awad-without your great efforts, I may not be in this position) I was a boarder. This was the first time I stayed away from my family. It was very interesting however. I stayed in the dormitory with my friends of various races from all over Simunjan District. They were Ibans, Malays, Javanese and Chinese. We stayed together as brothers. I was in Form One A, the best class with 35 students. I was offered Advanced Malay, English, Intergrated Science, Mathematics Course B (which was tougher than Coures A), Husbanndry (Agricultural Science) Woodwork, Physical Education. History, Geography and PE was he subject I hate the most. My teacher was Mr Setphen Passin (retired). He was the father of Madam Teresa Stephen. Times went on smoothly. In 1975 I sat for my Sarawak Junior School certificate Examination (SJC) SJC was equivalent to PMR. I obtained a Grade I – my family was very proud of my colourful achievements. My village folk was also very happy with my achievement. I was sent to Tun Openg Secondary School. To study in Form Four. The school was located across the Sarawak River. To go to Kuching Town we have to go on board a sampan. I passed the dull moments for 2 years. I said it was a dull moments because of the water supply problems.More often we had to hunt for water a mile away from our boarding house to get clean. I was active in St John’s Ambulance. I was proud to wear my uniform especially when I was sent to be on duty outstation (during inter-school athletics meets) I sat for my Malaysian certificate of Education Examination (MCE) on November 1977. I was very happy to be out of the school. While waiting for MCE result, I went for an Agricultural Training at Agrcultural Training Centre, Sungai Pinang Serian for three months. At the centre, we learnt about the right ways to plant vegetables, Short Term cropping, Long Term Cropping, Farm Management, Home Economics, Livestock Farming and Woodworking. It was a very enjoyable life there because we mixed well with friends from all over Serian, Simunjan and Bau District. This was also the first time I went along with my Bidayuh friends. We were given an allowance of RM15.00 per month, and we were given free food and lodging. My MCE result were announced when I was still having my course in Sungai Pinang. I only obtained a Grade 3. At that time, a Grade 3 holders can apply for a temporary teacher in Pimary or Secondary Schools. Since I still liked to study in schools, I tried to appeal to Study in Form Six. I went to Education Department Head Quarters in Kuching. I personally went to see the Director (Tuan Ismail Tuan Mohamad). He Referred me to Madam Hajjah Norolah Luk, the Officer In-Charge Of Schools Section. She posted me to Simanggang Government Secondary School. I accepted the offer halve-heartedly because my targeted school was at the Junior College Dato Patinggi Haji Abdillah. There was no more vacancy there, according to the officer. I reported in Simanggang Secondary School so late. I missed so many lessons. I felt it was too far away for me to catch-up, but my teachers told me to carry on. I was appointed as a school prefect, and the Chairman Of The Islamic Students Society Of the school. My busy days started. I felt that I could not coupe with my studies. However I would not gave-up. My parents expected me to go on well with my studies. Iwas active in Malaysian red Crescent Society and I was appointed as Head Section leader. I sat for my Higher School Certificate (HSC) at the end 1979. I could not answer most of the question asked in every paper. At the end of the day, I packed all my belongings to go home. While waiting for my HSC, I was offered as a temporary teacher in Simunjan Government Secondary School. I taught Malay Language and Agricultural Science for Form One classes. I was also given the subjects Arts and Physical Education for Form Two Classes. I received my first salary (RM 450.00) at the end of January 1980. I could hardly survive with that amount. I still gave my mom a sum of RM50.00 every month. I could buy an electric fan “Toshiba” and an "Olivetti" type-writer. At that time, we were paid until December. At the end of the year, every teacher were assigned to be on duty in the school. There 5 teachers to be on duty weekly until the school reopened.

I sat for my STP. The papers were all in malay medium.

I was offered to be a temporary teacher in the same school for another year. I taught malay language for the transition classes, Agricultural Science for form 1, Physical education for form and Civics for form 2.There was an increment for my salary. I Receiced RM 480.00.

My STP result were announced in April. I obtained 1 P 3 S1F. Still lacking of 1 principal pass to get a full cert.

I applied for teachers training. I went for an interview around August. I applied for 2 days leave. I still remeber that the officer who interviewed mewas Puan Rabiah Johari, my former teacher in Tun Abang Haji Openg secondary School, and the Ex-ducation Director. She smiled at me when I entered the room. The session only tok about 10 minutes. Most of my collegues sessions took times about 30 minutes.

At the end of the year, I again sat for my STP. I changed my strategy. I dropped my Econmics subject,because to me that was a real killing subject. So I only sat for 3 principals subject and 2 subsidiary subject: General Paper dan English Usage.

I received my offer letter from Batu Lintang Teachers' College while I was sitting for my STP examination. I was offered Secondary School Course majoring in Malay Studies and History. After I received my December salary (that time, temporary teachers were paid 12 months salary from January to December), I made preparations for my teachers training. I was asked to buy a pair of maroon track suit, a pair of canvas shoes, medical check-up (X-ray costed RM23.00) plus other miscellaneous items. All in all I spent around RM 300.00 to start my training as a teacher.

I reported as a trainee teacher on january 4th, 1982. Unfortunately, there was a mistake somewhere when i filled my Agreement Form. I was asked to go back to get my sureties to endose the form.

With that I missed my orientation program for 3 days. So I missed a lot of information on what to register in cocurriculum activities. the only vacanies were Red Crescent, Audio-Visual Club and Volley Ball Club.

March that year, my beloved father passed away after a long ilness - asthma.

The lectures went on well for the whole year round.

I was appointed as one of the Orientation Committee 1983.

First term holiday, I attended a Leadership Course at Rajang Teachers' College for two weeks. It was organised Ministry Of Education (Teachers Training Division) and Peretak Youth Training Centre. 15 trainees from each of the three Teachers Colleges attended the course. It was a very interesting but tiring course. I learnt a lot from the course.

I sat for my Phase I examination. After the examination, I was posted to Siburan Secondary School for my practicum which lasted for one month. The result of the examination was announced after the mid year break. I passed. We undergone the second Phase of our training. The subject offered became tougher.

1984 was my final year in the college. I was appointed the chief editor of "Cauldron", the college magazine. That made my life in the college busier. I got to know my wife. She was a second year trainee.We got to know each other. In the end we planned to settle down after we finished our training.

Our practicum was in May and ended in July about 12 month. Every lecturer was happy with my teachng and preparation.

At the end of he year, I sat for my final year examination. My posting letter was released at the end of the year. I was posted to Bintulu Government Secondary School.

I reported to the school on 26 December 1984. I was warmly welomed by the Principal, Mr. Gerald Lee. I was asked to stay at the flat and supposed to share with two other guys, whom were my college mates.

I was assigned to teach Malay Language in Form 4 and Form 5. I was shocked because at the college, I was trained to teach the subject at junior level, that form 1 to form 3. I tried to negotiate with the principal so that I would be given the junior form classes. His response was that I was greatly needed to teach the senior form. So I tried my very best to teach such classes.

Just after 2 weeks of teaching, the School Inspectorate visited the school. They were three of them. Puan Zaharah Hj Bujang (now Datin Hajjah Zaharah, Director Of Institute Teachers' Training Tun Abdul Razak, Samarahan. and also the wife of UNIMAS Vice Chancellor). Another one was Encik Jeniri Amir (now Dr Jeniri Amir, a lecturuer in UNIMAS) and Encik Mortada Haji Alop ( now the Deputy Director Of Education Sarawak). Dsepite the shallow experience in teaching, I was deeply praised by them for performing well in the class that they observed.

I was engaged in June 1985 at Batu Pahat. I did not go for the ceremony because of financial problem. ( Thanks goes to Cikgu Sulaiman Atan from Muar for his kindness to arrange the engagement we were lost contact, where are you now?).

After 6 months of engagement, we were married on November 26 1985.

My wife was posted to Bintulu Government Secondary School. (to Mr. Gerald Lee, the Principal Of Bintulu Government Secondary School, thanks a lot for your kindness in ensuring Mdm. Khadijah could be posted to this school).

25 August 1986, my first child, Nur Amalina was born, which meaning that we have a new member in our family.

1987, everything was fine.

1988, Mr Lee transferred o St Joseph's Secondary School. Mr Nicholas Ugul came as a new Principal.

I was offered to be a part time demonstrators (penunukajar sambilan) in UPM campus Bintulu. I was asked to give lectures in Mlay Language Pre Limb and First year students. So, I earned side income.

My beloved mom passed away in August 1988. I went back to Simunjan.

I bought my first car Nissan Langely (2nd hand) at RM 17,500.00 from a collegue.

1989, everything was fine.

Prize Giving Day held for he first time. Before that, it was done briefly during he school assembly. Encik Putit Matzen was invited to officiate the events and gave away the prizes to the students who achieve excellent in both academics and cocurriculum.

That was the first time the school song sung by the students. The Principal organised a competition to compose the School Song. The winner was awarded with a Certificate, a Plague and a sum of RM100.00.Guess who was the composer of the song? Is the song still on untill today?

12 April 1990, Nur Amirah, my second daughter was born.

November 1990, I sat for my STPM examination, the first time since I completed my teacher training. The result was fine with a full certificate. General Studies (Pengajian Am) E, malay Language (Bahasa Malaysia) D, History (Sejarah ) D, Geography (geografi) subsidiary pass and Arts (Lukisan) also Subsidiary pass.

I was appointed to B10 under the Two Tier Scheme, I have just received my letter of appointment, then, the Government announced on the Sistem Saraan Baru (SSB). So I did not enjoy my B10 salary. Under SSB, there was no difference in the salary of SPM/MCE and STPM holders.

The year 1991 went on smoothly.

1992- Nur Amalina - sent to St Anthony Kinder garten afternoon session.

1993, my final year in the school. I submitted the transfer form to the principal. he told me that he also applied for a trannsfer.

Nur Amalina started her schooling in Primary One at SRB Agama Bintulu ( a religiuos-based primary school) which was temporarily situated at Bintulu Develpment Authority Training Center.

Nur Amnah - my third daughter was born - 11 September 1993.

I got my letter of transfer. I was transferred to Serian Government Secondary School, although my first choice was Santubong Secondary School. Serian Sec. School was my second choice.

I went to the Bintulu District Education Office to geta letter of transfer for my daughter, Nur Amalina to Serian Primary School. The officer En. Kamaruddin felt sorry because my daughter have to study in an ordinary primary school because there was no religious school in Serian.

I was busy packing. I was helped by my wife, who was just one week after her confinement.

I officially left Bintulu on 26 November 1993. It was such a sorrow day. A number of my collegues sent me off at Bintulu Airport. Sayonara Bintulu, at last we depart afer nine years of sweet stay (of course they were ups and downs during my 9 years in Bintulu).

I officially reported for duty in SMK Serian on 21 November 1993. Mr Zulwali, the Principal told me that I was given Malay Language and History subjects for form one and two in the afternoon.

1994, SMK Serian celebrated its 30th anniversary. A dinner was held by Parent-Teacher Association to mark the celebration.

Mr Zulwali went to persue his PhD in UK. Mr Haili Dolhan reported duty as the Principal.

I was appointed as chief house master for Limbang house in the afternoon session. The sports meet was scheduled to be held in May. This made me and my collegues busy preparing and training my athletes to represent the house. I was also assigned to be incharge of Red Crescent Unit and Students Development Program Committee. That made me more occupied.

At the end of the year, I went to see Mr Haili Dolhan to apply teaching senior form in the morning. I told him that I had no experience teaching junior form. I had been teaching Malay Language of form 4 and 5 for nine years in my former school. I have no confidence to teach junior forms. I was told to bear with that because there were no vacancy in the morning.

1995, I still taught Malay Language and History for form 1 and 2. In the 2nd term, one teacher was transfered back to Peninsular Malaysia who taught Malay Language ang Malay Literature in Form 6.

I was asked to take over the classes. I accepted the offer. It was a very challenging task. I had to read four literature books. However I mananged to do it.

january 1996, my beloved sister who stayed with me to look after my children passed away suddenly. According to the doctor in Serian Hospital, she suffered from kidney failure.

So I had to send my children to my neighbour Mr Rabuni's wife. She wasa a housewife.

I was awarded an "Excelent Service Award" or "Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang" with a salary movement as vertical or "Menegak".

1997, I bought my first PC "Austin" costing about RM5,000.00 ( now, one can get a complete set of PC for only RM2,000.00) with acces to the internet. I was the second one to have access to internet. The first one was Mr. Wong (Paul). So, used to refer to him for any problem I faced regarding the internet. he was ever ready to give render his service anytime I need help. My collegues always asked me to surf the internet to get materials for their subjects.

In September, I was offered a Distant Learning Programme with University Malaya in Academy Of Malay Studies. Our center was at the Telekom Building, Were Road, Kuching. It was an interactive lectures with a Tele-Conferencing facilities which was provided by Telekom Malaysia. Our lectures were at night from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm every Monday to Friday. The students interacted with the lacturers. However, due to the high cost of operation, the university changed the mode to recorded lectures. The university sent VTRs to each center and we only watched video. The lecturer for each course went to the center for tutorial two times before the examination.

In 1998, Puan Juita Senawi Reported as the new Principal of Serian Secondary School.I sat for my first semester Examination in UNIMAS and obtained 2.85 points. We proceed our second semester course. The center was still at Telekom Building. however the lecture was still in a recorded mode. It was still a busy year for me and my Distant Learning mate. We attended lecturers almost every weekends. The courses that we attended became tougher. We sat for our Second Semester Examination in August, at Telecom Training College. We have a week break before the Third Semester Registration. Our venue for the lecture was changed to th Dynamic Seminar at Yew Ho Building just next to the District Mosque, Kuching. The lectures was well organised since the Dynamic Seminars took over the management. We were offerd 5 courses for the semester. The lecturer for each course came for tutorial twice. The rest of the course was a recorded lecture through VTRs. The recorded lectures was very flexible. If the students could not attend the lecture, they could borrow the VTRs for them to view at home.
